Mark Bloomfield
President and CEO
Mark A. Bloomfield is president and CEO of the American Council for Capital Formation (www.accf.org), a business economic policy organization. The ACCF conducts research, educates the media and engages policymakers on U.S. economic policy, in particular, tax, regulatory, energy/environmental and trade issues. He is also a founding director of the International Council for Capital Formation (www.iccfglobal.org).
Mark has been a commentator on politics and economics for more than three decades on BBC Worldwide Radio and TV, on ABC World News, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer among others and he regularly pens op-eds and is quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, and other media outlets. He also hosts the blog, www.MrCapitalGains.com.
ABC News has called Bloomfield “a well-connected spokesman for American business.” CNN noted he is “well schooled in the arts of both economics and politics and is one of the most influential figures operating behind the scenes in the Congress." Bloomfield is a regular commentator on politics and economic policy on the Potomac for BBC Worldwide News who calls him “a clear, knowledgeable analyst of the economic scenery and global situation.”
In May 2010, Mark was the subject of The Wall Street Journal's Weekend Interview, joining Noble Laureates Gary Becker and James Watson; business legends, Richard Branson, Hank Greenberg and Mark Zuckerberg; public servants, Ben Bernanke, Hilary Clinton and Henry Kissinger and Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood and singing sensation Shakira.
Mark has appeared before the U.S. Congress, corporate boards, and civic groups. He is a co-editor or contributor to six books on tax and economic policy including The U.S. Savings Challenge: Policy Options for Productivity and Growth and The Consumption Tax: A Better Alternative.
Mark hosts what Senator Lieberman calls “Washington’s last salon” -- ACCF Economic Policy Evenings -- intimate dinner gatherings of influential Members of Congress, prominent journalists, business leaders, and ambassadors to discuss politics and economic policy in an off-the-record, no-holds-barred setting. The Economist noted, “Participants gather away from the cameras and grandstanding to discuss the issues of the day and on occasion help steer economic policy.”
Mark has been a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute and a Senior Fellow at the McDonough School of Business.
BBC observed: “Mark is head of an economic think tank by day, a mega-runner in between, and a professor at night.” He has run long-distance races around the world, including the Boston and Athens Marathons, the JFK 50 Miler (“America’s Ultra Marathon”), and the legendary Comrades Ultra Marathon (89 km over grueling terrain) in South Africa. Mark is Comrades’ “first Ambassador to the United States” and the recipient of the “Spirit of Comrades” award. The Hill profiled him as “The Ambassador: Mark Bloomfield is part wonk, part endurance athlete.” Mark is proudest of his medal, at age 59, from the National Youth Run in Zululand and for his trophy for coming in last in the Capon Valley 50 K Run in West Virginia. The University Club of Washington D.C. awarded Mark the “Renaissance Award” for his contribution to athletic excellence.
Mark received a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School, and Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College.
